SPECIAL GUEST

Mark Lipinski
The Quilts of Pickle Road
You will be hard pressed to find a more entertaining
lecture personality and enjoyable quilting class than
one taken with international quilt teacher and quilt,
fabric designer, and creator and former Executive Editor
of Quilter’s Home magazine,
Mark Lipinski. Dubbed “the bad boy of quilting,” by the
international press, Mark’s no holds barred, brutally
honest, riotous PG-13 talks are half quilting and all
stand-up comedy.
More . . . |
|
|
Finished quilt top: 73 x 61 inches (maybe)
Unfinished block: 6.5-inches square
Why a Mystery Quilt?
There is nothing better than finding a single block that
can inspire you to make one, two, three or more
different quilt designs. Not knowing the end result
before you start the project makes the trip even more of
an adventure. It is a fast and easy-to-piece design with
the only limitations being your willingness to play with
color and textures! Even if you’ve never sewn a curve
before, you will be surprised at how flawless your
curved blocks will be by the time we break for lunch.
When choosing your fabric, of course you’ll want four
fabrics that go well together but don’t underestimate
the power of choosing the right values – for that is how
this particular quilt was designed – using the clear
values of dark, medium and light. Again – make sure your
fabrics are DARK, MEDIUM and LIGHT in value no matter
how wild the pattern! If you don’t have 3 distinct
values this mystery quilt may not work!
Consider making a monochromatic quilt using three
different tones from the same color family! How about
trying textural fabric like, batiks, for a Balinese
look. Throw caution to the wind and do exactly the
opposite of what I’ve asked for – Replace your light
fabric with your very dark fabric – even black – and
vice versa! Have a lot of scraps? Make a scrappy version
by creating 3 piles of scraps of the 3 values needed. I
think that a stunning quilt would be using a dark and
medium from the same color family then using an opposite
color on the color wheel for the light. For instance, a
dark blue print medium blue print and a bright orange
print. How about dark purple, medium purple and lime?
HAVE F-U-N!!!
You can’t screw up this quilt (even if you screw up the
values) so be creative, throw caution to the wind and
have some fun!
What You’re Going to Take Away From This Class . . .
Anybody can duplicate someone else’s patchwork pattern.
We’ve all done it. BORRRRRING! In this class, through a
simple and fun mystery quilt format, you’re going to
learn how to take any pattern from a book, magazine, or
packet and rework it so that the design becomes 100%
your own, essentially taking inspiration from one
pattern and ‘re-designing’ it in myriad ways to suit
your own creative tastes and eye! Believe it or not, one
pattern could yield you dozens of different and unique
quilts – from very simple to very complicated!
This easy quilt will allow you to learn the basics of
this ‘re-working’ technique plus allow you to design a
quilt that works for you – learning how to sew curves
with your eyes practically closed won’t hurt either!
Code of the Class
The class will being right on time so arrive a little
earlier to set up and be ready to rock’n roll. If you
need clarification on any part of this list or about the
class in general – without giving away the mystery –
please feel welcome to give me a ring (908-876-1208) or
email me at
pickleroadstudio@aol.com. Xoxom
I can’t wait to meet with you – we’re going to have a
blast! This class is rated-PG-13. Prizes will be given
away during the class and, the Queen of Curves will be
crowned at the end of the day – so be prepared to take
your walk around the room as you being your reign! xoxo

Everything you can do with a sweatshirt whether you see
the sweatshirt or not, it’s there somewhere.
This is the class that Barbara is known for , she has
been teaching all over the country , just when you think
you can’t do anything with that old sweatshirt , it’s
stained , maybe it has a hole in it , Maybe it’s just
ugly but you got a good price ! Whatever reason you got
stuck with those old shirts here is the answer.
This class goes over every detail in making jackets that
are just appliquéd and needle felted , to stadium
jackets that you don’t see the sweatshirts , using wools
, wool felts , cotton , old , jeans and more , to long
duster coats ( inspired by a Legend in movies and
Television ) but using sweatshirts and fabrics and
creative ideas for embellishing. And for those of you
out there that are like Barbara, and you know who you
are, “buttonhole phobics” she has alternatives to them.
Last but certainly not least, this is a wonderful class
for those who don’t, sew much, so, if you’re a novice or
if you are a seasoned sewer there is something here for
all of you.
This class introduces you into a world of using what we
have on hand, somewhere in our closets, drawers and
more.

She will create all kinds of groovy prints by removing
the color to create a printed fabric. Removing color
using discharge paste and a steam iron, adding new

very own one of kind fabric pieces but, to create a
palette of designs for needle felting as well, both flat
surface and dimensional this includes demos on how to do
both of those needle felting techniques .
The students will learn to rushce dupioni, outprint it
using pouncers and discharge paste, then using dye
sticks to color in the outprints. A How to on Faux
Chenille as another dimension to add on and silk threads
for needle felting appliqué’s that can be added.
The reversible purse is a quick sew once the fabric has
been designed. The reversible purse is only the
beginning; Barbara will also have clothing items that
these techniques can be used on. Models on hand.

There are many styles that require more thought and care
in alteration procedures.
Styles without darts make it harder to alter for larger
busts.
Raglan and dolman sleeves are more challenging to alter
for shoulder variations.
Collar alterations are also necessary if one changes the
pattern for shoulders.
One piece dress alterations may be different than
skirt/pant with separate tops for figure variations such
as large buttock or prominent abdomens.
Come and learn how to alter patterns with style
challenges.
