SPECIAL GUEST

Mark Lipinski
The Quilts of Pickle Road
You will be hard pressed to find a more entertaining
lecture personality and enjoyable quilting class than
one taken with international quilt teacher and quilt,
fabric designer, and creator and former Executive Editor
of Quilter’s Home magazine,
Mark Lipinski. Dubbed “the
bad boy of quilting,” by the international press, Mark’s
no holds barred, brutally honest, riotous PG-13 talks
are half quilting and all stand-up comedy.

“If you only make one quilt in your lifetime, this super-fast and easy quilt is the one to make!”

Finished quilt top: 78 x 99 inches
Unfinished block: 11-inches square
Blocks: 48 Simple Simon blocks plus border
Why a Simple Simon?
There is just about no quilt that comes together faster than these
quick-to-piece Simple Simon blocks. The best part is that using this pattern’s
method of cutting and piecing you will learn ways to create up to 70 different
unique quilt designs using the two simple blocks! After taking the class, you’ll
be able to transform every quilt block that you come across in a book, magazine
or pattern into your very own creation! Frankly, you’ll never look at a quilt
block the same again! Plus, even a quilter without a whole lot of piecing
experience will be able to create a queen sized quilt in just about the same
amount of time as piecing a run-of-the-mill crib size quilt! That’s why the
Simple Simon is the perfect quilt to make to give to a friend or family member
as a token of your affection and good wishes.
Now don’t go looking online for a finished Simple Simon. I guess you can but
you’ll be defeating the purpose of the whole lesson. This is a class that will
challenge your creative spirit and teach you how to turn any hum drum, run of
the mill pattern into something unique and totally yours.
Simple Simon is so versatile and easy to make that there is no end to the
possibilities of color and style combinations. Whether you choose batiks, hand
dyes, brights, contemporary or traditional prints, 30’s, children’s patterns,
plaids, flannels, or a combination of the above, your Simple Simon is bound to
be a hit! Simple Simon is so easy that the novice quilter will quickly want to
make another. For the experienced quilter, Simple Simon is such a relaxing and
imaginative quilt to put together that it will be impossible to be satisfied
with only one!
Bring to class Supplies and Equipment
• Rotary Cutter
• Cutting Mat
• Wide Plastic Quilter’s Ruler (6”x24”)
• Pins (if you’re a “pinner” – ugh!)
• Sewing Machine, extension cord and/or power strip – in good working order and
student should know how to operate it
• 100% Cotton sewing machine thread in a neutral color
• A notebook and pen
• A digital camera is also helpful to capture all of the ideas!
Materials
• Fabric A: 2 ½ yards (block fabric)
• Fabric A (border): 1 ½ yards (optional outer border fabric – not needed in
class)
• Fabric B: 2 ½ yards (block fabric)
• Fabric C: 1 yard (inner border fabric not needed for class)
• Fabric D: 1 yard binding fabric (not needed in class)
• Fabric E: 6 yards backing fabric (not needed in class)
• Batting: Standard queen-size batting (needed as a design wall)
The Simple Simon works especially well with bold, large-sized prints – the
busier the better. Just remember that any combination can work well –
complimentary designs and colors or those fabric and color choices that might
even seem a little “too close for comfort,” and almost clash (just be sure that
the values are very different)! DON’T BE AFRAID OF WILD COLORS AND LARGE, YUMMY
PRINTS! THIS IS A QUILT YOU CANNOT SPOIL! LEAVE YOUR COMFORT CIRCLE, BABY, AND
HAVE SOME FUN (Look at it this way – you may get hit by a Mac truck after the
class and you would have missed your opportunity to let loose for once in your
life….).
One little hint: When choosing your fabrics try to be careful that
they’re not too close in tone and color – you want to be able to tell one fabric
from another from across a room. BE SURE THAT THE VALUE OF THE FABRICS ARE VERY
DISTINCT AND DO NOT BLEND INTO EACH OTHER SO THAT THEY LOOK LIKE ONE FABRIC WHEN
THEY ARE PUT NEXT TO EACH OTHER!
Quantities specified for 44/45”-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. All measurements
include a ¼” seam allowance. Sew with the right sides together unless otherwise
stated. You will have MORE than enough to play with. You might even consider NOT
buying your backing, binding and/or outer border fabric until AFTER the class!
If you have any questions or comments don’t be afraid to pick up your phone and
give me a ring (908-876-1208) or email me at
pickleroadstudio@aol.com. xoxom
Cutting Instructions

Nuno Felting is the Japanese word for Fabric. By
manipulating a minimum amount of wool fiber through a
fine base weave we could make a felted fabric with
characteristics quite different from traditional felt.
Nuno felt is lightweight with drape and flexibility.
There are many possibilities for transparency, exciting
texture, and creativity. This wonderful seminar focuses
on this technique also known as laminated felting.
Barbara will spend this time with you, showing step by
step the Nuno felting process, to create beautiful
lightweight garments and accessories. Laminating wool
and silks together sounds like a mismatch but it unfolds
into lovely garments that can be embellished with beads,
buttons, embroidery, needle felting and more. This is a
great educational opportunity for everyone no matter
what your sewing or felting levels are. There will be
models on hand and a discussion on the type of silks
that can be used and what else other than wool roving
can be added in, you are in for a surprise as to what
you can put into this felting.

Sabrina Diehl –
Patchwork Place
I think there must have been a sewing
machine power cord plugged into my belly button at
birth. I can’t remember not sewing. My first electric
sewing machine was a Singer Sew Handy that I received
from Santa in the 2nd grade.
I had the “fiercest, most fashionable” Barbie’s in all

experience of becoming “all out excited” over a new
hobby or activity only to cool once the “new” has worn
off. Usually this leads to an unfinished project, or
projects being relocated to a forgotten box in a
cupboard or drawer.
